Citizen’s Theatre redevelopment project evaluation

Information for interviewees and contributors
Thank you for taking part in this evaluation which has been commissioned by the Citizen’s Theatre. 

Background
The Citizen’s Theatre (Citz) re-opened in August 2025 after a 7-year closure to redevelop the original Victorian building, which was no longer fit for purpose. The ambitious £41.5m project, which faced significant delays and challenges, was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Scottish Government, The City of Glasgow, Creative Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, private trusts and foundations, and individual donors. A year after re-opening, the Citz hopes to evaluate and assess the impact of this investment on the theatre’s audiences, stakeholders, and staff. Specifically, the Citz would like to find out if/how the redevelopment has:  

- expanded the Citz’ reach and made the theatre more accessible 

- enabled partners and stakeholders to work with the Citz

- impacted on Citz staff members’ roles and working lifeThis will help the Citz to understand the impact they are having, to report back to project funders, and to share insight and learning with others who may be planning capital projects. 

How the research will be conducted
The evaluation will gather together reflections and experiences from staff, stakeholders, and audiences. The research will be carried out by independent researchers Eric Hildrew and Flora Menzies. They will be using a range of different tools to find out what people think, this may include: surveys, workshops, interviews, and focus groups.

Surveys and forms will be hosted on Survey Monkey. Interviews / focus groups will take place either in person, on Teams, Google Meet, or over the phone. Interviewees will be emailed a link to book their session using the Cal.com service. Interviews will be recorded for the purpose of the research. We will abide by the Centre for Cultural Value’s evaluation principles.

If there are specific ways in which we can adapt our research methods to make them more accessible to you please let us know and we will be happy to make adjustments.

How the evaluation will be shared
The findings will be published in a report which will be shared with the Citz, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and other project funders. It may be published on the Citz website and shared more widely.

Your data
Any personal data collected in this research will be used solely to enable the evaluation of the Citz redevelopment. All personal data will be deleted once the research has been completed, and by the end of March 2027. Interviews may be transcribed using the automated functions within Microsoft Teams or by a transcription plug-in such as Fathom. If a transcription service is used, the recordings will be encrypted and securely transferred to this third-party for confidential transcription. Further details about the transcription process are available on request. We will use  Survey Monkey to analyse surveys and feedback forms. 

In the report, interviews may be directly quoted as excerpts and attributed to a particular role, e.g. ‘Citz staff member’, however these quotes will be anonymized. None of the names of interviewees or contributors to the evaluation will appear in the report.

The Citz will act as data controller for the purposes of this research. Eric Hildrew and Flora Menzies, freelance consultants, will act as data processors. Any incentives will be administered by the Citz.

Your consent
If you are taking part in an interview/focus group, during the booking process, you will be asked questions which ask for your consent to participate in the research. Your involvement in the research is voluntary and you can withdraw from the research without giving any reason. If you would like to withdraw you should inform Eric or Flora in advance. Whilst consent will be gathered for the purposes of participation, the data is collected and used as part of the research and therefore the lawful basis for such processing will be public interest.
